1996 ABC updated the look of World News Tonight, the first major change to the general look since 1983. A brand new theme was also composed, with more than a few hints of the classic ABC News music within. This coincided with a percieved change of focus to more feature stories, and a related drop in ratings.

2005 Click for larger image ABC World News Tonight anchor Peter Jennings died on 8th August 2005, from lung cancer. He was 67.

2006 While many speculated Charles Gibson to be the natural choice to succeed Jennings, ABC went with the somewhat surprising choice of an anchor duo - weekend anchor Bob Woodruff and correspondent Elizabeth Vargas. Their new World News Tonight premiered January 3, 2006, with a graphics change (but keeping the set and music). This edition, with Vargas presenting from the studio and Woodruff presenting from Iran, showcases what is expected to be normal procedure - one anchor on the road, the other in the studio.
