BBC North East and Cumbria became a region in its own right in 1962. It's regional news magazine was Home at Six presented by Frank Bough. Frank's move to BBC Sport heralded the appearance in 1964 of MIke Neville (from Tyne Tees Television), complete with a new name Look North. Not to be confused with Look North (Leeds)

The biggest shake up in the region came in 1996 when Mike moved back to Tyne Tees, 32 years later! He was replaced by Carol Malia and John Lawrence

Home at Six
1963
Where it all began. Home at Six introduced the news service for the North East and Cumbria in 1962. Frank Bough was the presenter. It was renamed Look North in 1964 to be presented by a young MIke Neville from Tyne Tees TV

Late Look North
1980
This is a sound only file (mp3) of Late Look North from 1980.

Thanks to John Lewis for the recording and for the sketch of the slide he made at the time.

Does anyone have video footage of this sequence?

Look North & Late Look North
1980
Here are two more examples of this theme in use. The announcer in both cases is Tom Kilgour. The presenter of the main Look North programme is of course Mike Neville.

Thanks again to John Lewis for the recordings. John's sketch is pretty accurate as we can see here from these stills taken from a cinefilm recording made by Dave Baldwin in 1976

It's Look North with Mike Neville! Hmm, not too sure about those titles though!

As well as reading the news Mike seems to think he can produce the programme at the same time, perhaps if he left the producing to the producers he would have known if Newcastle were playing at home or Cardiff were playing away...

Every region has it's strange set of titles. Look North (Newcastle) is no different. What's this one all about?

1988
BBC North East moved from its studios at Broadcasting House on New Bridge Street in Central Newcastle to a new purpose built Broadcasting Centre on Barrack Road in Fenham, Newcastle. It was quicky nicknamed 'The Pink Palace' due to is exterior and interior colour schemes!

BBC NE & Cumbria served 3.2 million people in 1991 and the highest viewing figures recorded between 1991 - 1992 for Look North was 0.8million people.

Look North with was presented by Mike Neville and Wendy Gibson. A very upbeat piece of music in 1991 for Look North. Note the BBC North "N" logo in the top left hand corner of the titles. The titles now reflect images from the region in a camera lens.
