OPTING OUT

Or not, as the case may be. Before the days of digital television and UK Today, the default region was BBC South East.

Below are some examples of when things didn't quite go to plan at BBC Wales, resulting in a sneak look at how BBC South East do things.

BBC Wales News Late Bulletin
Mid 1980s
BBC Wales News - with Beverley Thompson (Jenni Murray).

To begin with a Late Bulletin from BBC Wales or BBC South East, Hmm!

BBC Wales News Afternoon Bulletin
Mid 1980s
BBC Wales News - with Noreen Bray (Jane Markham).

This bulletin started so well and then, oh dear who pushed that button! What did happen here?

BBC Wales News Afternoon Bulletin
Late 1980s
BBC Wales News - with Chris Morgan (Rob Curling).

A classic, quick, wake up we're on! Notice how Chris began the Bulletin on time, reading the news to Broadcasting House in Llandaff.

BBC Election 1987 BBC Wales!
1987
BBC South East News - with Steve Clarke.

Not really a mistake. BBC Wales opted out for most of the last half of the Breakfast Election Special, showing it on BBC 2 Wales instead. This was the result of the Regional opt at the end of the programme.

Wales Today
2001
BBC Wales Today - with Sara Edwards.

Who turned the lights out in Cardiff Bay? Right up to date with an edition of Wales Today from Friday 26th January 2001. Cardiff Bay disappears from behind Sara Edwards during the main edition of the programme. Nice recovery though!

Breakfast Wales
2001
BBC Wales Breakfast - with Jane Case.

A slight sound problem from BBC Wales on the morning of Thursday 10th May 2001 at 6.55am.

BBC Wales Breakdown 30th June
2001
Due to a major power failure at Television Centre on the evening of Saturday 30th June 2001, all BBC Channels went off the air for a while. Here's how BBC Wales handled the situation.
