Breakfast Time
18.04.1984
A suitable opening from May 1984, with the latest on the seige at the Libyan People's Bureau which resulted in the murder of WPC Yvonne Fletcher. Selina and Fern Britton bring the overnight developments.
Olympic Breakfast Time
1984
The BBC went Olympics crazy in Summer 1984, and Breakfast Time was no exception. Out went the usual titles, making way for dramatic footage of daybreak in Los Angeles.
Christmas with Breakfast Time
27.12.1984
'Tis the season to be jolly...look out for Santa Claus as Breakfast Time opens with appropriate footage. Frank Bough drew the short straw - no holiday for him!

Breakfast Time
20.01.1986
The look and feel of Breakfast Time changed little since it began, but 1986 saw the stop-frame animation replaced by computer graphics. Sadly the new look didn't last, as Breakfast Time was "yuppified" later that year.
Breakfast Time
1986
Presented by John Stapleton and Kirsty Wark.
A new upmarket look for Breakfast Time from late 1986. Gone were Frank's sweaters and the sofa in favour of the serious news format which has remained ever since. Francis Wilson was granted a reprieve though, and stayed with Breakfast Time until 1992.
The shorter "on-the-hour" titles are from Frank Bough's last edition just before Christmas. He was reunited with Selina Scott and part of the original sofa to send him on his way.
Breakfast Time Special - Zeebrugge
1987
Breakfast Time only appeared at weekends during exceptional circumstances. One such occasion was the Zeebrugge ferry tragedy in 1987 which claimed 55 lives. Frank Bough and Sally Magnusson have the latest.
Olympic Breakfast Time
1988
Olympics time again, this time from Seoul, Korea. By this point Breakfast time had been a formal, news-based programme for almost two years so no special titles. The graphics followed the style of Olympic Grandstand.
BBC Breakfast News: Gulf War Special
1991
During the Gulf War the BBC provided round-the-clock coverage of events. The familiar titles have a a themed intro; while the 8am start time suggests this was a weekend edition.
BBC Breakfast News: Local Elections
1991
Another extended intro, this time marking the results of the local elections. As I recall, another dreadful night for John Major, with a Loony candidate ousting a Tory councillor!
BBC Breakfast News Summary
21.09.1991
Breakfast News was never shown at weekends, but from September 1991 BBC1 began its Saturday with a five-minute summary of the news. Chris Lowe reads the first such bulletin, which introduced an abridged version of the BBC News theme.
Business Breakfast
13.04.1993
Presented by Nick Clark and Sara Coburn.
When Breakfast News launched in 1989, the first half-hour of the show was Business Breakfast, a round-up of all the latest city news. In 1993 Business Breakfast was doubled to one hour (at the expense of Pages from Ceefax) and became a show in its own right. This is the first programme to feature BBC News' corporate look introduced April 1993.
BBC Breakfast News
13.04.1993
Presented by Nicholas Witchell and Jill Dando.
The first BBC News corporate look was launched on Monday 13 April. From now on all the main news programmes would share the same virtual reality studio but the backdrop would change to reflect breakfast time, daytime and late news. Breakfast time got a warm pink to brighten the otherwise cold-looking blue, and here is that first new-look edition.
BBC Breakfast News
1997
Presented by Sally Magnusson.
The unified look of BBC News was breaking up in the late 1990s and Breakfast News got a new, very individual intro together with a new set. By this time, other breakfast shows had switched to digital clocks and Breakfast News followed suit.
BBC Breakfast News Summary
04.10.1997
With the introduction of BBC's new logo in 1997 a modification to news titles was needed. This is the morning summary sting and endboard; seen here as recorded. No editing - honest!

The Funeral Mass of Pope John Paul II
08.04.2005
Not really Breakfast news but as it went out at 8:40am I think this is on the right page. After a long illness, Pope John Paul lost his battle for life in April 2005, ending his pontificate of 26 years. Millions descended on St Peter's square to witness his final journey, which was also relayed to John Paul's home town of Krakow, Poland.
Huw Edwards was there for the BBC, presenting the three-hour service.
