BBC Nine O'Clock News
1973
Presented by Robert Dougall and Richard Whitmore.

The main evening bulletin against a backdrop of the BBC newsroom. Not a PC in sight! Note the similarity between the title graphic and that used around 1987.

BBC2 News Extra Close
1973
Newsnight on BBC2 was seven years away in 1973. But the second channel's late news tradition was already well-established, with the late bulletin known as News Extra.

We don't have any titles for News Extra, but here you can see David Holmes close an edition from Summer 1973. And yes, the sound is out of sync with the pictures for some reason.

Four years later, and the main bulletin switches to a one-presenter format. Angela Rippon brings us the headlines - Jim Callaghan's government decides to plod on despite losing his majority.

The Nobel prize for Northern Ireland peace campaigners, and Mrs Thatcher is having second thoughts about outlawing the closed shop (she did in the end of course). Note the pre-programme continuity - the voice is that of Paul Harris from BBC South, who's speaking over the network clock.

News on 2
1978
Before Newsnight BBC2 screened a conventional news bulletin; broadcast times varied from mid-evening to late night. No special presenters, just the usual BBC news team - in this case Angela Rippon.

After the 1979 rebrand, News on 2 continued with one minor alteration! Your newsreader is Richard Whitmore.

Almost time for bed, but not before Peter Woods updates us on the condition of Yugoslavia's President Tito.

BBC Nine O'Clock News

Back to BBC1 now, and a change of colour for the twin globes in 1981. Things aren't going to plan in our first offering; Jan Leeming appears flummoxed as captions appear where they shouldn't be. Eventually we cross to Christopher Morris with news of Prince Charles' engagement to Lady Diana Spencer. No such problems in our later bulletin (29.06.1981) read by Richard Baker.

BBC Nine O'Clock News
1981
BBC news programmes got a radical makeover in Autumn 1981. The heralding music of the last ten years made way for a new theme; the stripes era had arrived! Here's the first new-look main bulletin; instead of the usual circle the stripes form a distinctive figure 9.

1982 and the second set of titles for Newsnight. The main talking point - more misery on the railways as the train drivers are out on strike again.

BBC Nine O'Clock News
1988
The BBC decided it wasn't good to have all their news looking the same come 1986. So each bulletin got its own unique look; the revamped Nine O'Clock News boasted the latest computer graphics from Martin Lambie-Nairn. And it was back to two presenters.

BBC Late News
from 31.10.1988
Presented by Michael Buerk.

Martin Lambie-Nairn worked his magic on BBC News from 31 October 1988, introducing a common look and the transmitter mast icon across BBC's evening and late bulletins. The aim was to redefine the BBC's news image. However, the new look was panned by viewers, who likened it to a Nazi symbol, and BBC unions, who sought assurances such a major rebranding project would never again be outsourced. How times change... Breakfast News and the One would retain their own identities for the time being.

Newsnight - The Verdict

Against all the odds, John Major was returned as Prime Minister in 1992. Here Jeremy Paxman presents a Newsnight election analysis special. Meanwhile the IRA responds to the poll result as only they know how.

Things look a little more familiar, with a major facelift for BBC News in May 1999. From now on, the regions would insert their headlines in the title sequence. However, this clip was recorded from Sky Digital which at the time did not carry the English regions, so the insert here is from UK Today.

BBC News at Ten O'Clock
11.09.2001
After 30 years, the BBC decided to move its main bulletin to 10pm to cash in on the loss of ITV's News At Ten. The first Ten O'Clock News was broadcast on 2nd October 2000. This bulletin is from 11 September 2001 and only one story dominates the headlines - the terrorist attacks in New York.

Time for a change and the News 24 look came to the Ten on 16 February. The new sequence, featuring a large red globe, is interactive and allows one of the white text bands to carry a major headline instead of the default "BBC News". As yet we haven't seen this, but it won't be long...

Coming just 14 months after the previous BBC News makeover, a more radical rebrand of the entire BBC News operation saw a new opening for the lunchtime bulletin plus some tweaks to the set. The bulletins were also renamed "BBC News At...(Time)", meaning the late bulletin now had almost the same name as its ITV rival which was relaunched at the start of the year. Gill Sans was returned as the typeface for on-screen captions.

A Saturday night late bulletin, with the globe devoid of any hour. Where possible, the late bulletin now starts at 10pm seven days a week on BBC1, though this is not always possible due to fluctuating schedule commitments.
