Prior to 1981, the BBC's midday news bulletin was a mere 15-minute effort before Pebble Mill At One. It was also the first BBC1 programme of the day when there were no Schools programmes. In this edition, Richard has some sad news to pass on.

BBC News After Noon
1983
Presented by Richard Whitmore and Anne Diamond.

An extended edition from the 1983 election campaign. Who would have imagined Anne Diamond reading the BBC network news? Well, here's the proof! She is assisted by Richard Whitmore who, at one point, isn't sure which camera he should be looking at!

BBC News After Noon
13.05.1985
Presented by Richard Whitmore and Frances Coverdale.

The aftermath of the Bradford fire; police believe smoke bombs may be the cause.

BBC News After Noon
1986
Presented by Richard Whitmore and Sue Carpenter.

An edition from 1986. The BBC replaced red with blue in news titles from 1985, but the music remained the same.

BBC One O'Clock News
1986
Presented by Martyn Lewis.

News After Noon was dropped in 1986 when BBC1 adopted a daytime schedule. In its place was the half-hour One O'Clock News, anchored by just one presenter. This clip is from the early days.

BBC One O'Clock News
1991
Presented by Philip Hayton.

A later edition. Featuring an ominous warning of a blackout in New York...hang on, didn't that actually happen recently?

BBC One O'Clock News
1994
All BBC bulletins adopted the same "virtual reality" look in 1993, bringing a rather cold, blue look to the lunchtime bulletin. The newscaster here is former ITN man Edward Stourton.

BBC News at One O'Clock
1999
The first showing of the present titles, from May 1999. The new set (used for all BBC bulletins) overlooked the newsroom and was a vast improvement on the previous blue backdrop!

BBC News at One O'Clock
2001
A widescreen view of the same titles, which were first shown on 2nd October 2000. At the same time a regional insert was also added, though in this clip we see "UK Today".

BBC News at One O'Clock
2004
Presented by Anna Ford.

Brand new titles for all the main bulletins from Monday 16 February. This adopted the design News 24 had been using since the end of last year and the music got a remix to boot. Apart from that it was business as usual, with no changes to the set.

BBC News at One O'Clock
04.04.2005
Presented by Anna Ford.

Following the Pope's passing on Saturday 02 April, thousands of pilgrims are now gathering in St Peter's Square as the Pope's body begins its public period of lying in state.

Coming just 14 months after the previous BBC News makeover, a more radical rebrand of the entire BBC News operation saw a new opening for the lunchtime bulletin plus some tweaks to the set. Gill Sans was also returned as the typeface for on-screen captions.
