1969
Colour came to BBC1 in November 1969, and with it a legendary TV icon. The famous mirror globe was the brainchild of Murray Andrew who built several prototypes from which the familiar design was chosen. Murray's globe reigned supreme for 15 years, albeit with occasional colour changes and design modifications along the way.

At the time BBC1 Dover was channel 50 (100kw) whilst BBC2 was on channel56 and ITV on channel 66.

After three years the ident was modified. The word "COLOUR" now appeared in an italic serif font. The same clock leads into the 9 O'Clock News.

1974
Click for larger image Recovered from very early N1500 footage, the 1974 Christmas globe looks suspiciously like the 1980s COW with its geographical contours. Instead of the usual reflection there are holographic snowflakes in the background; and as a bonus we have the closedown from 23 December 1974. I'm guessing the early start to Christmas that year was to allow for changes that were afoot...

This is the genuine ident for Christmas 1974 - the glass bauble previously believed to have been from this year, sourced from a 1979 BBC Christmas tape, has been moved to the Spoof page.
