Closedown Menu
A run through tomorrow evening’s programmes begins the BBC1 closedown sequence
Crackerjack trail
Stu Francis and The Krankies look forward to another action-packed show this Friday. Programme trails for children's shows - like continuity - was no different from that of other programmes at the time. But where, pray where did they get those awful hostesses?
BBC1 Christmas Promotions
A more contemporary look for Christmas in 1981, combining synthesised carols with traditional festive icons. Among our selection of clips is a full-length trail for The Kenny Everett Television Show. Madcap Kenny had switched from Thames to the BBC in 1981, his first show for the other side was a Christmas special broadcast on Christmas Eve.
BBC1 Christmas Promotions
(Right) A groovy version of Hark the Herald Angels Sing is the soundtrack to this promo for the Kenny Everett television Show, Apologies for the fault with the final part of this clip.
BBC1 Christmas Trail - The Battle Of Midway
Charlton Heston and James Coburn star in our wartime blockbuster tonight on BBC1. Followed by the globe baubles.1982

A trail for Panorama forms part of the late evening on Sunday before the first of those programmes.
Over on BBC2...
What fun you could have in those pre-corporate days. Here Malcolm Garrett-Eynon uses an "animated" slide sequence to publicise the alternatives over on BBC2.
BBC1 Promotional Stings
Two stings for BBC1 - a generic station ID, then a variation spelling out all the programming types BBC1 has to offer. Here it's used to herald a new series of "Juliet Bravo".
BBC1 Lunchtime link
BBC1 comes out of the State Opening of Parliament early and they'll be rejoining Schools programmes at the next available opportunity. But with plenty of time to spare, Peter Bolgar runs through the lunchtime offerings before deviating into an extended interval.

Wednesday menu
A fairly average Wednesday in 1984 with Fame, Taxi and Sportsnight. Nevertheless, Ray Moore manages to sound enthusiastic. And that does say "BBC1", honest!

BBC1 Continuity
BBC1’s first attempt at a snooker quiz is previewed here. Despite being given its Big Break, it never returned.
Sunday Evening on BBC1 Promo
Look how similar this Sunday menu graphic is to the Christmas logo - there might have been other variations.
BBC1 Timings error
Looking at this today it would seem like an automation error. But this was 1984 and everything was done live, yet announcer Tim Nicholls breezes through unfazed. We're holding on to the preceding trail when Tim starts his announcement; eventually the globe appears but when the sound from tonight's film starts (on cue), the globe lingers for a few moments longer.
BBC1 Presents... The Hot Shoe Show
BBC1 presents...The Ribbon! An alternative device to the usual BBC1/BBC2 logos which appeared fully animated on trails, and was extendively used on cross-promo slides in the mid-80s.
Monday menu
Monday night on BBC1 offers athletics, Only Fools And Horses and The Monday Film. A good one for sports fans!
BBC1 Friday Menu
BBC TV used to have two specific seasons of programming each year and the autumn new series were rolled out during September. This promo tells us about three of those new series, all of which started on the same evening, which included Les Dawson replacing Terry Wogan as host of Blankety Blank.
BBC1 Tuesday Menu
Hard to imagine Tuesday on BBC1 without EastEnders now, but in 1984 it was the norm. So Lenny Henry fills the 7:30pm slot here. Nice graphics, if rather 80s.
BBC1 Christmas Promo
A rather nice animation promoting family Christmas fare this Christmas followed by what must be the quickest introduction to the next programme ever broadcast!
