Three years later, and a change of ident. Apologies for the absence of colour on this clip, but the picture shows what it should look like.
BBC1 South West - COW Globe
1985
First seen at 6:35pm on Tuesday 19 February. Once famously displayed for 10 minutes during Ceefax AM in 1986; it is from this unplanned screening that our clip comes. So enjoy a full minute of the COW.

The virtual globe first shown on 16 February 1991. There was no accompanying clock.
One evening in 1994, transmission of a regional documentary meant the rest of the night's programmes were timeshifted and broadcast from Plymouth. That meant a night of local continuity! And of course, a local closedown, albeit without the clock. Ian Phillips is your announcer.

...Or not; at least Seymour Road managed to get a copy of the Christmas idents this year. Just a pity they weren't correctly branded.

BBC News goes widescreen from October 2000, but most regions did not have widescreen facilities so the picture was zoomed to 14:9. The local idents were updated to include the BBC URL.

Out with the balloons and in with the dancing girls (and boys) from Good Friday. A spectacular piece of film but is this really appropriate for introducing Spotlight?

BBC1 South West - Capoeira Still
2002
Red faces all round when just one day into BBC1's new look, the death was announced of the Queen Mother. Many felt the new idents were inappropriate for introducing coverage of such a story, so a blurred still of Capoeira was introduced.

2002
BBC South West's rendition of the charming BBC1 Christmas ident. The absence of the "Subtitles" aston was a bonus, but due to 4:3 resizing the picture quality was lower than the network version.
BBC1 South West
2003
Following the transfer of all regional programmes to BBC1, the English regions got a full set of idents. As with other regions, Tai Chi is now a common sighting before the news.
Another common sight at 6pm is Skateboarders, in use from September 2003.

Those Bouncy Puddings with a local feel. But the decision had been taken to scrap the junction between national and regional news programmes, so this was rarely seen.

BBC ONE South West - the local One for Christmas! Although now confined to just before main news bulletins, there was more time to see the Oompa-Loompas this year, thanks to an early start to Christmas pres.

Winter fun for the circles era on BBC1 South West! Several regional ident slots were lost owing to a major national story in the week before Christmas. However, Snowball finally rolled up on Wednesday 20 December.

Penguins from Essex introduce the BBC1 regional news this Christmas. Some have questioned the suitability of the ident for use into news programmes, but finally BBC1 South West now broadcasts in full widescreen.

Helicopter - a good choice for BBC1 South West - seeing as it was filmed in Cornwall.
