SVT1 is the oldest channel in Sweden the primary channel of Sveriges Television, the Swedish public service broadcaster. It was officially launched in 1956 as Radiotjanst TV, becoming Sveriges Radio TV in 1957. When TV2 launched in 1969, it was renamed TV1.

The channel was renamed Kanal 1 in 1987 when it was decided that all programmes from the capital would be broadcast in Kanal 1. The two channels merged in 1996 and Kanal 1 was renamed SVT1.

In 2001, the channels were rebranded with the intention to make SVT1 a more popular channel.

1977
Click for larger image In the 1970's the Northern European broadcast TV stations making a VTR test. These tests including the latest techniques about visual effects, video editing and chromakey technology. The TV broadcasters who participated are: BBC, Thames, BRT, NOS, WDR, RB, SWF, DR, NRK, SR (now SVT), YLE and SFR. All these tests recorded on video tapes (Philips N1500) and called 'VTR test'. Sveriges Radio (Television) starts the test with a testcard from Stockholm followed by the logo of Eurovision. We seen clips from Le Marie Antoinette Show, The Singers and Scapins Rackartyg. Thanks to Michel van Dijk for this rare material.

TV1 Ident
1987
Introduced in 1987 as part of a reorganization of SVT. SVT1 (then known as Kanal 1) became "The Stockholm Channel" showing programmes originating from the kingdom's capital (while TV2 became the channel for programmes from the regions, "The Sweden Channel"). The meshes spinning around the large 1 are buildings in Stockholm, so one might compare it to the Thames ident.
