Gordon Radley Announcement
1982
For some reason, still unclear whilst a lot of other ITV companies were showing the film The Sweeny, TVS were showing Sweeny II. The result is that TVS ended up joining that evening's O.T.T. later than planned and instead crashed into the programme. There was no mention of this happening however in the announcement from Gordon Radley.
Gordon Radley (in vision) Announcement

The brown colouring on the TVS continuity set was quickly made warmer and here we can see it sporting a pink glow as Gordon Radley smoothly links us out of a trail for DJ and into Radio.

Sssh... All Star Secrets.
Malcolm Brown (in-vision) Announcement
1985

Here Brian Nissan introduces a programme celebrating 25 years of Coronation Street.
Promo Graphics
198?
A rare chance to see some promo graphics used by TVS without any other text. Generally TVS rotated the style of graphics used for promotions on a seasonal basis.
Thursday Comedy Promo
1986?
A promotion for two comedy series with the TVS symbol being created from some dancers.
Catchphrase Promo

A quick promotion for the first ever series of Catchphrase. For a short period between 1986 and the relaunch in 1987 TVS was always reffered to as Television South on announcments as this promotion shows.
Monday Line-Up
1986?
Malcolm Brown guides us through all the programmes in Monday night's schedule.

A quick cross-promotion for a programme on Channel 4 and then an announcement into We Love TV.
Tuesday Line Up
1986?
A very simple animationed menu for this rundown of TVS' tuesday night programmes, no clips of the programmes so we'll just have to rely on the announcer to make us want to watch.
Brian Nissan (in vision) Announcement
Christmas 1986
A festive continuity set for Christmas 1986 - the last to feature in vision announcements, but not quite as grand as the one from the previous year.
Brian Nissan introduces the little match girl.
Sunday Line Up

A festive animation for Christmas 1986
Monday Line Up
1987
Party style animations still in use for the new year, but notice that the background colour is blue this time around. Malcolm Brown guides us through Monday's programmes.
Sunday Promo
1987
A (slightly curtailed) simple promotion for the two main programmes for this Sunday Night. The station was still reffering to itself as Television South at this point, the practice continued until the new look was revealed in September 1987.
Friday Line Up
1987
Who needs computer graphics when you can make 3D models!?
Tuesday Line-Up
1987
Good use of the TVS symbol is made here by mixing it with water, some people say that the symbol looked like a fountain so perhaps thats where the inspiration came from for this promotion. The station still insisted on calling itself 'Television South' at this point, but not for much longer.
Malcolm Brown Announcement
1987
Malcolm Brown makes a quick announcement into the ITN News at One.
TVS Promotion
1987
"Say Yes to TVS!" - This promotion style was used from Septembr 1987 at the same point as TVS introuduced its computer-animated ident. This example also features a music track, unmistakably compossed by Ed Welch, which was known as 'TVS Symphony'. Ed also compossed the main station identity tune for this period and also the music TSW's Today programme which sounds very similar to this track.
Christmas Start Up
1987
A special filmed start-up sequence for Christmas in 1987, what's interesting to note is whilst most areas of christmas presentation had lavish 3D computer generated animations it appears by the time this sequence was made the money had run out and they had to resort to writing the christmas greeting in a teletext-style typeface.
New Year Promo
1988
TVS says goodbye to 1987 and hello to 1988 in this slightly abstract promotion.
New Year Promotion
1988
A look at things you can watch on New Year's Eve on TVS and a quick announcement from Malcolm Brown.
This promotion style was later recycled (along with a couple of others) in 1992.
Corporate Promotion
1988
An excellent promotion from mid-1988 highlighting some of the many programmes the company was making throughout the year. This came during the busiest period of production for TVS.
24 Hours Promo
1988
"From Next Monday you can watch TVS 24 Hours a day" - a simple but nice promotion making the most of the ident graphics to advertise the fact that TVS was entering the world of 24 hour broadcasting. Although, ironically the overnight service did not use the TVS brand but was called Late Night Late instead.
Olympics Promo
1988
TVS adapted its year old identity package to incorporate the Olympic rings for a special promotional package to promote both the games and the standard programming that was sandwiched around them.
'Kaliedescope' Autumn Season Promo
1988
After the Olympic Games TVS used this psychadelic campaign to promote the new Autumn season. Johnnie Walker voices these two generic promotions.
During this campaign it was also common for announcements to be made over the graphics, the spinning TVS logo ran for an extended duration to allow for this.
New Drama Promo
1988
Another example from the Autumn 1988 campaign highlighting some of the new drama's coming soon.
Christmas Promo
1988
There was an unusual star for Christmas 1988 on TVS, a sheep. After the impressive christmas graphics in use in 1987 and those that had just been use as part of the Autumn season promotions it looks a little less flashy. A sheep is probably not the first thing you would think of at christmas however this promotion manages to retain that warm Christmas feeling.
Spring on TVS
1989
Quite a classy promotion to preview some of the spring highlights for 1989 on TVS.
Making It Here in the South!
1989
There was a brief trend for sung 'jingles' in the late 1980s several ITV companies including TV-am and Tyne Tees adopted them. TVS also briefly ran a campagin in the summer of 1989. A warning to viewers of a nervous disposition - this promotion is pure 1980s cheese.
Thursday Programmes Trail
1989
Just when you thought the computers had taken over TVS unleashed this style of promotion for the Autumn 1989 season featuring a big 3D, real life, metalic, TVS logo.
The question is: did they make the logo just for this promotion or did they nick one of the signs from the building?
Winter New Season Promotion
1990
A nicely designed winter-themed promotion for the new year season on TVS.
Christmas Start-Up
1990
A jolly Malcolm Brown wishes us a good morning, good morning, good morning for Christmas Eve in 1990 and let's us know that TVS' aim is for us to have fun.
A nice example of the festive presentation in use in 1990.
Christmas Day Trail
1990
A couple examples showing the style of presentation for Christmas 1990. "There's something for everybody on Christmas Day..." does that include the cat? Note the individual logos for each genre such as "Disney on TVS", "TVS Entertains" and "Movies on TVS".
New Season Movies Promo
1991
In 1991 TVS adaptaded a generic style of promotions which were used across the ITV network featuring bright colours and music by Enigma. This particular promotion highlights some of the big movies coming soon on TVS. The voice is that of Bruce Hammal.

Making Watching Worthwhile
1991
In 1991 as TVS prepared to submit their bid for the franchise they launched several classy promotions and a new slogan 'Making Watching Worthwhile'. This one highlights some of the regional programmes produced by TVS, with a slight South East flavour.
Making Watching Worthwhile
1991
Another in the Series of 'Making Watching Worthwhile' promotions. This time highlighting The Ruth Rendell Mysteries. The music featured on this promo sounds as though it is loosely based on the TVS signature tune.
Making Watching Worthwhile
1991
Another of those 'Making Watching Worthwhile' promotions, this time for regional programming, notably Country Ways.
Making Watching Worthwhile
1990
A corporate promtion carries on the Making Watching Worthwhile theme.
Davro/Motormouth Promos
1991
A couple of ITV branded promotions for the TVS produced networked series Davro and Motormouth.
Autumn Preview
1992
An extended five minute long promotion to show off the highlights of the Autumn 1992 season on TVS starts with a big face welcoming us to a shape of things to come. Lets see... Meridian logo... Big face... co-incidence? Probably. But in all seriousness its nice to see that the TVS promotion team made a real effort for one last time.
Continuity Junction
1992
A quick example of how a typical junction would be handled in the Autumn of 1989. With a slide promoting next Saturday's evening film, a promotion for the film Working Girl and then another slide for the next programme - Dame Edna's Neighbourhood Watch.
Keith Butler provides the announcements.
Red Heat Promo
1992
Another example of the Autumn 1992 style of trailers. That big face is still present in this promotion for the movie Red Heat.
Also included is a quick continuity link into Dame Edna's... Neighbourhood Watch.
Trailers
1992
In 1992 as opperations at TVS were winding down some promotions began to recycle old styles. These two examples reuse a style from the start of 1988.
Christmas Day Trail
1992
Now where have we seen that sheep before? The TVS sheep from 1988 was revived for TVS' last festive season. Not because they ran out of ideas though - they brought back a few old campaigns in 1992 in order to save money before leaving the ITV network. Although some of the other festive presentation has been visually more impressive you can't blame them for bringing back this continuity classic.
