Jennifer Gavin
1984
A long line of charming Jennifers graced the announcer's hot seat at TSW, but Jennifer Gavin was perhaps the longest serving. She left TSW around 1988 and has not been heard of since. The other Jennifer, Ms Clulow, defected to TVS.

Jeremy Curry
1986
You might not remember the face but you'll certainly recognise the voice of Jeremy Curry. He started as a letter reader on TSW's weekly feedback show "Televiews", then moved into the announcer's chair for a time. Jeremy continued as the voice of TSW and Westcountry trails until the mid-1990s. He has now moved to BBC South West.

Click for larger image Ian gets beamed up!
1987
At first glance you might think Ian has been put on air by mistake, and that the technicians are looking for the right colour background. Yes, it certainly looks that way. Then suddenly, Ian finds himself beamed up in a flah of white light, as if he is being abducted by aliens!

Which is just as well, because what you're seeing is TSW's intro to the television premiere of "Close Encounters of the Third Kind" in summer 1987. Ian lived to tell the tale and was back in the hot seat after the film.

Roger Shaw
1989
The Christmas tree is gone so we can now see what the continuity studio looks like in its hybrid stage. At the time, many ITV regions were abandoning in-vision continuity, but for TSW there was simply no other way of doing things and in fact a second IVC set was brought into service for daytime. Meanwhile, this would have been one of Roger's final appearances as he retired by the end of the year.

Click for larger image Mark Seaman was among the many guest announcers who passed through TSW from time to time. But just what is he up to here? Watch the clip and all will make sense... Note the new daytime continuity set, introduced to tie in with the "Four Seasons" identity.

Dinah Lawley (any relation to Sue?) took her place in the announcer's chair around 1990, and stayed with TSW until their demise. Here she introduces Matthew Kelly's first episode of You Bet! - which coincidentally was shown the same day as BBC1 and BBC2's new identities launched.

All weekend viewers experienced picture break-ups and freezes. Was everyone's set on the blink? No - the problem was caused by the weather, as Ruth explains. Later in the year, she introduced a Richard Digance special. And she's keen to point out Richard's connections to the region...

Sally Meen
1992
Sally Meen was one of the last faces to join TSW, around 1990. Here she is taking the opportunity to plug Telethon before introducing Graham Kerr.

Click for larger image David Fitzgerald
1992
Click for larger image David Fitzgerald introduces TSW's final Telethon - ITV's fund-raising spectacular. Sadly Telethon was axed later that year. Why?

The late Ian Stirling at his most versatile in four clips recorded in Autumn 1992. The axe was looming for TSW but the show must go on, as they say, and Ian's enthusiasm showed no sign of waining. Included among this batch is one of his legendary soap links - this one for Home and Away which, in a new evening slot, has caught Ian's eye.

Ruth and Ian say goodbye
31.12.1992
Click for larger image For TSW's final evening on air, Ruth Langsford joined Ian Stirling on the sofa to help entertain those of us spending New Year's Eve at home. And when those two got together, they unleashed a popular and much-missed double act. Here they are just before "A Day In The Life Of..." at 7:30pm.

Then, it was time. The moment TSW hoped would never come. A few minutes before midnight, Ruth and Ian say goodbye for the last time.

c1985
Click for larger image Throughout its life, TSW was fiercely regional and would promote itself as a station in its own right rather than part of a network. However, there were occasions when the corporate ITV branding got a look-in, but of course it was on TSW's own terms...

TSW - Image Promo

TSW likes to make you feel at home. That's the tagline of this promo in which TSW favourites join a family on a cosy evening in. Taken from 50 Years of ITV in the Westcountry, hence the narration from Richard Bath.

Early 1987
Whoops...a few technical problems give Roger Shaw a few minutes to guide us through tonight's programmes on TSW. However the problem persists and it's over to the gramophone to keep us entertained for a while longer. Eventually, normality is restored and Roger can finally introduce tonight's "Murder She Wrote".

The weather is causing a few problems with reception in the region - but it's all down to the weather and there's nothing anyone can do about it except ride the storm, as Ian Stirling advises.

TSW Community Announcement
1986
Community Announcements characterised TSW from the outset. The short inserts were very simple in style - representatives of local organisations would come into the studios to publicise their cause. This example is for the Cornwall Bat Group.
