Until the introduction of colour, this is how Westward would open up each afternoon, with its own version of the Picasso card. The heraldic music comes from Ron Goodwin; the clip is reconstructed.

1972 and 1978
Click for larger image South West viewers are always treated like poor relations when it comes to TV - we had to wait until 1972 for colour! Westward launched a new ident, based on the last one, to celebrate this new era. In the late 70s the nautical fanfare was replaced by the jingle you can hear on the right.

Westward - Schools and Colleges
1977
Click for larger image Always wanting to create the impression of being a truly regional broadcaster, Westward stamped its name on everything, including programmes for Schools. Westward isn't thought to have made any schools programmes but this slide was a common site in the late 1970s, particularly at the start and finish of educational broadcasts.

Westward Clock
1980
Westward's distinctive clock incorporated both analogue and digital displays. It looks a bit like one of those clocks you might find at your local bank! The sliced box design was also used in Westward's promotional captions.

1970s - 1981
In 1969 Westward's startup music changed to Paul Lewis' "An English Suite", used for the remainder of the company's life. There were three versions of WTV's magnificent opening film, used in the 1970s and early 80s.

This was a more dramatic film featuring RAF Chivenor, civic pageantry and spectacular aerial views of the region.
