Summer is here so time to get out those strawberries and cream again. However, fans of the test card have to go without for Wimbledon fortnight because the BBC showed Wimbledon on BBC2 as well as BBC1 if there was no cricket taking place.

Wimbledon 821982 The first transmission from Wimbledon 1982 was heralded by the winning shot from the previous year's tournament which saw John McEnroe winning the first of his three titles.

Wimbledon 831983 In 1983, BBC TV began its coverage at 1.45 rather than 1.55, presumably because, as Harry explains, play began on the outside courts before 2pm for the first time in 1983.

Wimbledon 851985 By 1985, BBC1 had stopped using the clock to introduce live Wimbledon coverage. This clip is from later on in the tournament and the titles begin with a fly past of the Wimbledon complex.

Wimbledon 861986 As with the opening day of 1982, BBC TV began its coverage of the 1986 tournament with the winning moment from the previous year's final. Incidentally, Steve Rider introduced the first week's coverage this year. Steve was not to present another Wimbledon until 1998 due to Des being at the World Cup in France.
